There are a few things you will always here on a touch field and that is “hands” and “sub when you’re tired”. The former is definitely something that should be listened especially when hands are on. The latter however is an issue entirely on its on.

First let’s look at the logic of that statement. If I am a player on the field that gets tired, my immediate reaction is to sub; making your statement pretty redundant. However that is not the issue here. The issue is that players actually sub when they are tired and not before. There are two main issue when you sub after you have reached the point of tiredness.

The first is that if you are tired and on the field it means that you are performing well below your best and at risk of messing up or conceding a try. You also have to get off the field when you finally decide to sub and that takes a bit longer whilst you take a slow Sunday stroll off the field.

The other more important reason is that you run the risk of getting “stuck on” which means you have to defend for a few defenses when you are already tired. Basically what I am trying to say is that if you do get in a position where you are “stuck on” you should be relatively fresh because you have kept your subs rolling. This rarely happens because most people think they can make the difference and tend to sit on longer than they need to.

So next time you are on the side line ready to go on, shout out “sub before you are tired” instead. Just a thought.
